Getting a Mind for Golf
Jason Denaro Ph.D., insists golf is an easy game that people make difficult. As owner of the Mind Power Golf School in San Marcos, Denaro takes a unique approach to teaching golf by focusing on mental elements that will vastly improve a golfer’s game. Denaro, a sports psychologist, requires students to not just believe they can hit the perfect straight shot, but to KNOW the are going to perform the shot they pre-plan before they stand over the ball, and he gives students a money-back guarantee if, after the first day, they cannot hit the ball straight to 140 yards. He says all students should achieve this goal after just two hours of instruction.
Denaro insists a golfer's mastery of the pre-shot routine is essential. Successful golfers must visualize how the shot will play out and repeat an positive swing thought verbatim before every swing. It is called neuro-linguistic programming and, according to Denaro, when the brain hears how the shot should play out rather than just thinking it, the player’s muscles receive a more positive download. Denaro, who as Director of Instruction has conducted his schools in San Diego for 16 years, believes neuro-linguistic programming works for all golfers except for the inherently negative. He can often tell during the initial process of students filling out an experience questionnaire who will be receptive to his training.
Golf is not for the curious. When a player shoots and immediately looks up to see where the ball has gone, it throws off the trajectory of the ball. Denaro stresses that players must maintain consistent positioning of their heads, pushing their faces down slightly toward the stationary ball at the moment of impact to keep the upper body parallel to the swing plane and subsequently, on target. The other tip Denaro emphasizes is the extension through impact: the direction that the players hands swing to determines the direction the ball will take. This position needs to be monitored during each golfers programmed pre-shot routine. The School has developed a putting teaching technique that no on else in the area uses. The APEX putting system shows a line from the ball to the hole as if there were dots along the green from the ball to the cup. He says that most golfers using the APEX system are able to putt less than thirty times per round.
Mind Power Golf School accepts golfers from pros to those who have never held a club. Denaro prefers to keep his teaching ratios one-to-one or two-to-one. And yes, you actually have the doc as your instructor. This week marks the start of his three-day school special, which is discounted to $695 (regular rate is $1250) and has a maximum three-to-one teaching ratio.
